Certificate in Information Technology (IT) (Mathematics and Statistics) (approved by Faculty of Science, 2000)

The new technologies available through what is usually called IT are having a significant impact on the work of mathematicians and statisticians, indeed on anyone doing quantitative work. Symbolic Manipulation Packages are helping pure mathematicians and theoreticians in all disciplines of science to accomplish calculations never possible before and the solutions can be displayed in new ways that help build understanding and intuition. To recognize those who have completed classes with a substantial IT component and to provide these students with a document to present to potential employers who seek graduates with IT skills, the Department offers a Certificate in IT.

A Certificate in Information Technology will be awarded to a student who meets the following requirements:

1. Completion of the 20 credit Major or Honours program in Mathematics and/or Statistics. Students in a combined program should contact the Undergraduate Advisors.

2. Completion of the following classes that teach a set of skills particularly relevant to mathematicians and statisticians.

(i) CSCI 1100 and MATH 1400 (or its equivalent);

(ii) MATH/CSCI 2112, MATH/CSCI 2113, MATH 2300;

(iii) At least three of STAT 2050, MATH 3170/CSCI 3111, MATH 3210,

MATH 4270, MATH 4800.

3. A minimum grade of B in all identified IT classes.

NOTE: The Certificate in IT is only available to those entering their first or second year in Mathematics and/or Statistics during the academic year 2000/2001 or later. A student who takes these classes will have been taught the following IT skills:

Use of Symbolic manipulation packages;

Use of Numerical packages;

On-line acquisition, installation, testing and evaluation of mathematical software;

Use of on-line mathematical tools;

Programming skills in C, MAPLE, S-PLUS, Fortran;

How to write mathematics for the Web and include sound and also static

and animated displays;

Data and Model visualizations, including animations in 2 and 3 dimensions;

Data collection, generation, manipulation and processing - particularly of very large data sets.
