4.1 Using LaTeX

Compare this with the \label and \ref commands.

4.2 Using BIBTeX

BIBTeX is a companion program to LaTeX that creates a list of references from a bibliographic database.

Standard bibliography styles

plain
Entries sorted alphabetically; labeled with numbers.
unsrt
Same as plain, except entries listed in order of citation.
alpha
Same as plain, except labels formed from author name and year, e.g. “Lam94”.
abbrv
Same as plain, except entries are more compact.

Many other styles exist, e.g. acm, amsplain, siam, etc.

4.3 Author-Year Citation

Standard LaTeX does not handle this. :-(

However, packages have been developed for this. :-)

4.3.1 The natbib Package
This package defines:
\citet
Textual citations.
\citep
Parenthetical citations.

Provides the following bibliography styles:
abbrvnat, plainnat, unsrtnat
