Derek Tittensor I am a research scientist working for three organisations: the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), Microsoft Research, and Dalhousie University.

My research examines human impacts on biodiversity in the oceans, large-scale modelling of ecosystems from first principles, and the distribution and biogeography of marine species. My work is a combination of theoretical modelling, statistical analysis, field observation, and experiments.

Update: Our paper on the number of species on Earth was listed as one of the top 100 science stories of 2011 by Discover magazine.
