The users home directory are physically located on machine CHASE. These home directories are mounted on all other (Sun) Unix machines. Machine CHASE has a disk named "/hold" where users can store (large) files. There is no individual disk limit on that disk. However NO BACKUPS are made from these files! The /hold disk is accessible from machines CHASE and Sigma. Every user will have a directory on that disk (same name as your username). Machine Sigma has a 32GB disk named '/scratch'. This disk is for large job outputs on STATS only which means that this drive will not be accessible by anyother machine. The same as for /hold (on CHASE) applies otherwise for this disk. Each user has a personal disk quota. This quota consists of a limit which a user can use permanently, the so called soft limit' (mostly 60MB) and a so called 'hard limit' (100MB). The user can never exceed the hard limit, however he can use disk space which exceeds his soft limit upto the hard limit for a limited time (6 weeks). If time has expired and the user still exceeds his soft limit then he will not be able to create or save ANY files till he reduces his disk usage to a value below the soft limit. Till he has done this he will not be able to log in from xterminals nor does mail function properly for the user. The command to view your personal quota settings is: quota -v The first number gives the disk space used, the second number the soft limit and the third number the hard limit. If you are over your soft limit the system will tell you how many hours/days/weeks you have to get below your soft limit.
