COURSE OUTLINE for Mathematics 1010b, Calculus II, in 2001-2002

TEXTBOOK

"Calculus - Concepts and Contexts, Second edition" by James Stewart. Available at the Dal Bookstore in the SUB. Either the single variable or the full edition of this book can be used for math 1000 and 1010, however students intending next year to continue with the second year calculus classes math 2001 or math 2002 should be sure to purchase the full edition which will be used as a the textbook for those courses as well.

CHAPTERS

Sections 5.5 to 5.7, 5.9, 5.10, 6.1 to 6.7, Appendix H, 7.1 to 7.6, and 8.1 to 8.10

GRADING

Assignments 15%, Test #1 20%, Test #2 20%, Final exam 45%.
Note that CALCULATORS will NOT be allowed (nor required) during any of the tests or examinations.

There will be 9 ASSIGNMENT SETS. The specific problems (usually from the textbook) will be announced in class the previous week and posted on the website www.mathstat.dal.ca/m1010b/home.html. They will be marked the following week. Your lowest mark (of these 9 assignments) will be dropped. With regard to consultation with other students about assigned work which is to be handed in, please read the "Intellectual Honesty" section on page 24 of the 2001/2002 Undergraduate Calendar.

There will be 2 TESTS one of which will be held during the week of Feb. 11 - Feb. 15 and the other during the week of Mar. 11 - Mar. 15.

The FINAL EXAMINATION will be scheduled by the registrar's office.

The MATHEMATICS And STATISTICS LEARNING CENTRE in Room 009 of the Chase Building will normally have a calculus tutor available on weekdays between 9 am and 7 pm (except 5 pm on Fridays). Solutions to the assignments and the midterm will be posted outside the Learning Centre.
