During a four week period every summer AARMS invites highly regarded faculty from around the world to deliver graduate courses in the mathematical sciences and their applications. Our goals are to broaden the education of graduate students and to encourage promising undergraduates to continue their study. While, in a given year, a good number of students come from Canada, our School continues to bring to Atlantic Canada students from around the world. Indeed, the multicultural, international flavour of our School and the possibility of forming lifelong friendships and collaborations amongst people of different backgrounds and cultures is one of our School's strengths.

Each course consists of 5 ninety minute lectures per week. Grades are assigned and certificates of completion are issued to successful students. Since our courses are Dalhousie University graduate courses, we hope that students' home institutions will offer transfer credit for AARMS summer courses. Certainly, we are prepared to help students achieve local credit in any way possible.

Given that our students have diverse backgrounds, courses are taught at the entry level of a typical Canadian graduate programme. Our courses cover a broad spectrum of mathematics. Each student must register for two courses, but in order to increase the value of the programme and the overall educational experience and to the extent that this is possible, just one of these should be in a familiar subject. Our Summer School is modelled after a similar one in Perugia which has been operating for over 30 years now. We encourage students who have enjoyed an AARMS Summer School to consider applying to Perugia another summer.

Intended Audience

Graduate students and upper-level undergraduates thinking about the possibility of graduate studies, regardless of where you live, are encouraged to apply.

Registration

There is no registration fee. Space for approximately 30 students (each taking 2 courses) is available. To express interest in attending an AARMS Summer School, contact us before April 15. Enquiries after May 1 of a given year are unlikely to meet with success.

Financial Support for Participants

There are no registration fees. On-campus residence accommodation and meals for the duration of the school (and associated workshops/conferences) will be provided. Textbooks and/or course notes will be provided to each student at no cost. Students are responsible for the cost of their travel.

Travel to Halifax

From Newfoundland, the recommended method of travel is by air. From the other Atlantic Provinces Halifax may be reached by bus, car or air. Within Nova Scotia the best way to reach Halifax is by bus or car. From outside Canada air travel is preferred.

  • Local Attractions

    Halifax lies on the East Coast of Nova Scotia. The Municipality is the largest in Nova Scotia. Tourist attractions include Peggy's Cove (about 30 kilometres from Halifax), the waterfront and Historic Properties, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and the Pier 21 display commemorating the arrival of immigrants between 1928 to 1971. Also worth a visit, to obtain a sense of Halifax's position in history is Halifax Citadel. The coastal scenery around the Province is spectacular and the world's highest tides occur in the Minas Basin (about 120 km from Halifax).     A typical summer day in Halifax will have a high temperature of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius with occasional highs in the low 30s, and with a night-time low of about 15 degrees,
