Established in 1987 by the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics, the DSCS provides professional consultation to
researchers and graduate students. The consulting service serves
clients within Dalhousie University and outside Dalhousie
including government, hospitals, business and scientific
communities.
Over the past year about thirty substantial consulting projects
were carried out. Example projects include:
Analytics
of prescription opioid drug misuse in Nova Scotia.
Logistic regression models were applied to identify main
predictor variables that are strongly associated with opioid
misuse (work with Charmaine Cook, Sarah Flemming and Yue Liu,
Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness)
Maximum likelihood inference of forest bird
density from observed point count data (Dr. Cindy Staicer and
students, Dept. of Biology)
Comparison of different methods that quantify
genetic and environmental influences on retinopathy of
prematurity (Dr. Johane Robitaille, Dept. of Ophthalmology and
Visual Sciences)
Linear mixed effects modeling to analyze the
effects of gestational weight gain on their child body mass
(Emily Burke, Dept. of Medicine)
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses
of nursing surveys (Dr. Evelyn Kennedy, Cape Breton
University)
Statistical requirements for mould inspections
in Nunavut: confidence interval and margin of error for
sampling houses in Nunavut (Dillon Consulting limited)
Closing achievement gap in African Nova
Scotian learners: hierarchical mixed linear model for
longitudinal data for learning outcomes of grade primary and
grades 3 and 4 of African NS vs. non-African students (Dr.
John Leblanc and Sally Miller, IWK Pediatrics).
